Why the combination of vitamin D and vitamin K?
Vitamin D and vitamin K are important partner vitamins. Where vitamin D ensures normal calcium levels in the blood, vitamin K ensures the absorption of calcium in the right place – in the bones – instead of unwanted places such as the kidneys or blood vessels.
It is common knowledge that it is a challenge to produce sufficient vitamin D. This does not only apply to the dark days in autumn, but also in spring and summer our body’s own vitamin D production can be insufficient. Especially now that we are increasingly avoiding the sun, the only stimulus for vitamin D production in the skin. We spend a lot of time indoors and when we go outside we wear sunglasses, sun-protective clothing and sunscreen. When there is no or no sunlight, vitamin D becomes an essential nutrient. It then becomes necessary to supplement vitamin D in another way. We can obtain vitamin D from our diet, from fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel, liver and egg yolk. Unfortunately, the amount of vitamin D that can be obtained through food is never as high as the body’s own production in the skin and we often suffer, unconsciously, from vitamin D deficiencies.
A recent meta-analysis of scientific studies has shown that it is useful to combine vitamin D supplementation with vitamin K, because these two vitamins work together. Vitamin K is also found in food. Green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and parsley are rich sources of vitamin K1. However, this form is relatively poorly absorbed in the body. Vitamin K2, especially menaquinone-7, is considered the most efficient source of vitamin K. This form is produced by certain bacteria and is found to a limited extent in meat, dairy and eggs. Partly for this reason, our body often fails to extract sufficient vitamin K from our food. A supplement can then provide a solution.

High quality thanks to biologically active forms of vitamin D and K
In all our vitamin D products we only process vitamin D3. This form is more effective in increasing vitamin D levels than vitamin D2. Vitamin D3, as a biologically active form, is up to ten times stronger. For vitamin K2 we also use the biologically active form menaquinone-7 (MK7), from K2VITAL®. This raw material is known for its high absorbability and long half-life and ensures that Bonusan Vitamin D3 & K2 contains only the highest quality raw materials.
To ensure good absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins D and K in the body, we dissolve them in a fat matrix of extra virgin olive oil. Bonusan Vitamin D3 & K2 therefore contains no unnecessary additives and no added omega-6. In this way we prevent it from having an adverse effect on the omega-3 – omega 6 ratio. We colored the capsule wall dark using natural caramel, for the stability of the naturally unstable vitamin K2.
Bonusan Vitamin D3 & K2 offers a solution as a daily supplement of vitamin D, for example because there is little exposure to the sun, or because you are in a risk group. Consult an expert if you use anticoagulants (blood thinners), vitamin K can affect their effect.
Vitamin D3 contributes to the proper absorption of calcium from food and vitamin K2 then ensures the absorption of calcium in the bones. In addition, vitamin K2 contributes to normal blood clotting and vitamin D3 supports the immune system.
